Georgetown Students Taking Action Now: Darfur (STAND)
Georgetown University

Their Idea:
Georgetown STAND wants to run a nationwide "adopt-a-camp" initiative and involve local communities in providing for the humanitarian and educational needs of the displaced people in the Darfur region. STAND hopes to give children in Darfur the chance to learn, while motivating the American public to engage in political activism and pressure our government and the international community to end the genocide. STAND also plans on organizing a conference for college and high school students this summer, to develop a new generation of activists.

Organization's history:
Established in September of 2004, STAND has an active base of more than 600 students at Georgetown and works in conjunction with student groups at nearly 200 universities and high schools across the nation and in Canada. STAND originated the idea of STANDFast, a national day or remembrance and fasting that mobilized more than 170 universities nationwide, dozens of high schools, and several universities in Canada.

Human Rights Awareness on Campus
University of Florida

Their Idea:
Human Rights Awareness on Campus would like to mobilize more students to action on Darfur, by bringing well-known speakers like Don Cheadle and Paul Rusesabagina to campus. HRAC plans on continuing its grassroots Congressional letter-writing campaign (described below). The group wants to sponsor a village in Sudan and send supplies and aid there. HRAC also intends to mobilize the broader community by holding film and other screenings.

Organization's history:
Established in March 2005, Human Rights Awareness on Campus has 30 active members and over 200 students involved at some level. Their main objective right now is to mobilize a massive letter-writing and petition-signing campaign urging Florida's legislators to support legislation that would require specific action on the part of the US government to stop the genocide in Darfur. They're moving beyond the campus community only and have already brought several local religious congregations and community organizations into the network.
